Resumen de Wanted: a country to break up Syria's chemical arsenal

Debora MacKenzie

  • MacKenzie talks about the destruction of Syria's chemical arsenal. It looks as if Syria will be launching no more deadly gas attacks. Its government made a formal, confidential declaration of the country's chemical weapons to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on 24 October. The OPCW says that Syria's equipment for making and weaponising chemicals will be dismantled this week. After that comes the hard part: destroying the chemicals in the midst of a civil war. The OPCW has until 15 November to finalize a plan and until june next year to carry it out. It is now shopping for a country to host a mobile plant that will destroy the chemicals.
