The article presents a new illuminated sheet by the First Master of the Choirbooks of Siena Cathedral, an artist active in Siena between the last quarter of the thirteenth and first quarter of the fourteenth centuries. The privately-owned sheet belongs to the same Gradual as six other pages now divided between the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Fondazione Cini in Venezia and the Stanford Libraries (on deposit from the Burke collection). The Gradual may have come from the church of the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. Although the illuminator worked during the exciting period of Duccio di Buoninsegna and Simone Martini, his idiom remained rooted in the art of the preceding generation, demonstrating the complexity of the shift in style between the two centuries.
