The article presents an oil sketch by Matteo Bonechi which recently appeared on the art market in Switzerland with an attribution to Giovanni Camillo Sagrestani, providing a reconstruction of its critical fortunes and provenance. The canvas had a most interesting critical history: Hermann Voss was aware of it and included it in the 1927 Berlin exhibition of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italian painting. He recognissed Bonechi's authorship, but not its connection with the frescoes in Palazzo Taddei Giraldi in Florence, for which the painting was a preparatory study, together with a pendant now in an unknown location.
