This article focuses on the relationship between post-1914 statehood and maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean. The authors argue that the proliferation of contested States, including various de facto autonomous entities, in the region was the direct result of the retreat of the empire-centric world. The growth of contested statehood has only accelerated since 1991, and the sparse application of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, driven by the energy factor, has led to further instability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
