This paper is part of the ongoing research on the introduction of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach in Portuguese higher education institutions, which have undergone an intense process of internationalisation involving mobility and academic collaboration. Beginning with an overview of the pressures of globalisation within the overall framework of the European Union education policies, the more recent internationalisation policies in Portuguese higher education are examined to determine how they have been transferred and transformed institutionally. A query into the existing definitions of internationalisation, both abroad and at home, lead to the reflection on national policies and a potentially broader scope of strategic action in Portuguese institutions in areas such as the internationalisation of curricula content, student development of intercultural skills, and institutional foreign language learning policies.
