Resumen de L’architettura gotica in Sicilia centro-orientale nelle perizie degli architetti d’età moderna

Domenica Sutera

  • The paper focuses on the perception and assessment by modern age Sicilian architects of works built on the island in the Gothic period. The opportunity for the comparison emerges above all from the reports drawn up during the preparation of new projects (modernization, completion) that consider whether to preserve or demolish the structures of the past. The selected reports deal with matters of a predominantly aesthetic and stylistic nature, as well as with the reasons inherent in the structures and those of a strictly economic nature (construction site, funds available, etc.) are taken into account to discuss these assessments that range from genuine appreciation to harsh criticism. The examples dealt with in this paper and the examination of the documents found give an idea of the many aspects related to the involved players, the operating methods followed in the selection of the designers and in the preparation of the evaluation reports, the impact on clients of their opinions, and the architectural trends of the appointed professionals.
