The sculptor from Palermo Carlo D’Aprile is the author of several series “all’antica” statues with allegorical or mythological subjects. These statues were commissioned not only by Sicilian aristocracy but also by Castromediano family, dukes of Cavallino, near Lecce. Both Castromediano family and the Sicilian aristocratic family of Branciforti, princes of Scordia, placed D’Aprile’s works into the more rapresentative room of their mansions: the gallery. Thus, a direct contact between Castromediano family and the Sicilian aristocracy might have favored the engagement of the Sicilian sculptor in Terra d’Otranto.
