Resumen de Design thinking in development engineering

David I. Levine, Martha A. Lesniewski, A. M. Agogino

  • ‘‘Development engineering’’ is a new interdisciplinary field that we define as creating solutions that improve humandevelopment at scale in low-resource settings. We posit that design thinking is the core of development engineering, butneeds to be augmented for development applications to emphasize: (1) Incorporating development goals, constraints andopportunities; (2) Scaling for impact; and (3) Integration of novel sensors, experiments, and large datasets (e.g., from theInternet, satellites, and mobile phones). We used this framing of development engineering as the basis for a newly formedPh.D. minor at UC Berkeley. This paper describes the foundational course in the program, elective courses and the theoryand practice seminar. We provide lessons from our formative evaluation along with recommendations for improvement.
