  Identificar tempranamente a niños y niñas que podrían presentar algún problema de salud mental es fundamental para implementar acciones preventivas y de tratamiento. Para esto se requiere contar con instrumentos válidos y adaptados a las características de la población y a los contextos donde se aplican. El objetivo de este estudio fue validar el Pedi atric Symptom Checklist (PSC - 17) en estudiantes chilenos de primer grado de enseñanza básica. Se utilizó una muestra aleatoria de 5177 estudiantes participantes de un programa nacional de salud mental escolar, evaluados por sus padres o cuidadores y por su s profesores . Se realizó un Análisis F actorial Confirmatorio revisando la estructura propuesta por los autores del instrumento, consistente en tres factores: dificultades internalizantes, externalizantes y de atención.

  Los resultados encontrados son cohere ntes con lo reportado en la literatura, transformando al PSC - 17 en un buen instrumento de screening para su uso en las escuelas y centros de salud

  Early identification of children who may have a mental health problem is essential to implement preventive and treatment actions. In order to do this, it is necessary to have valid instru ments adapted to the characteristics of the population and the contexts in which they are applied. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to validate the Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC - 17) in Chilean first grade elementary school students. A random sampl e of 5177 students participating in a national school mental health program was used. The children were evaluated by their parents or caregivers and their teachers. Results of a Confirmatory Factor Analysis showed a three - factor structure composed of: inte rnalizing, externalizing and attention difficulties. These findings are consistent with what has been reported in the literature, transforming the PSC - 17 into a good screening tool for use in schools and health centers
