The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) is a criteria- based assessment tool that can be used as a curriculum guide and repertoire development monitoring system for children with autism and other developmental disorders, making it possible to establish a measure of verbal behavior, some motor and social skills of the individuals evaluated. The VB-MAPP contains five components: ‘Milestones Assessment’, ‘Barriers Assessment’, ‘Transition Assessment’, ‘Task Analysis and Skills Tracking’, and ‘ Placement & IEP Goals ‘. ‘Milestones Assessment’ presents 170 measurable learning milestones divided hierarchically into three levels. The three levels of VB-MAPP were established from typical child development milestones derived primarily from studies with US or European children.
Considering the socioeconomic and cultural differences that exist between the United States/ Europe and Brazil, this study analyzed the adequacy of VB-MAPP functional levels for the evaluation of verbal, social and motor repertoires of a sample of 61 Brazilian children with typical development, living in Belém do Pará, of both sexes, one to five years old. The procedure started with the conduction of an anamnesis session with the parents and/or guardians of the child, in order to obtain general information about the child and its behavioral development and to raise possible reinforcing stimuli for the participant. After that, a child observation session was held, lasting approximately thirty minutes, aiming to guarantee the inclusion of only children with typical development in the study sample. Each session was conducted individually and lasted approximately one hour, and the application of the test with each participant lasted for days or, in some cases, weeks. In addition, the application was conducted strictly following all tasks and scoring criteria defined in VB-MAPP for each domain and development milestone. Each participant was assessed from Level 1 of the VB-MAPP and the evaluation was applied in a hierarchical way: the evaluation of Level 2 was conducted with each participant after the conclusion of the Level 1 evaluation and so on. However, the participant was only assessed on a next level if he/she obtained 80% of the maximum possible score in the previous level. Participants were included in Level 1 if they did not reach 80% of the maximum score of that Level, or if they achieved that performance, they should achieve less than 50% of the maximum score of Level 2. To be included the next Levels, participants should obtain at least 50% of the maximum score at the specific level. The results showed that the functional levels proposed in the VB-MAPP were adequate to evaluate repertoires of a sample of Brazilian children with typical development: children up to 18 months of age performed the tasks proposed on Level 1, children between 18 and 30 months performed most of the tasks present in Level 2 and children between 30 and 48 months did most of the tasks of Level 3, increasing the data on the external validity of the instrument. Based on these results it is suggested the relevance of the use of VB-MAPP in the Brazilian context.
