This article offers a new reading of Theodor Fontane’s novella Unterm Birnbaum (1885) by emphasizing intertextual relations to Georg Philipp Harsdörffer’s narrative Das Zeugnis deß Geblüts (part of Der Grosse Schau-Platz jämmerlicher Mord- Geschichte, 1649/50). This approach not only reflects on Harsdörffer’s role as a pretext to Fontane but also accentuates the lines of tradition in criminal fiction between the early modern period and the late 19th century.

Der Beitrag schlägt eine neue Lektüre von Theodor Fontanes Unterm Birnbaum (1885) in der intertextuellen Verbindung mit der Erzählung Das Zeugnis deß Geblüts aus Georg Philipp Harsdörffers Grossem Schau-Platz jämmerlicher Mordgeschichte (1649/50) als Prätext vor. Dabei werden die Traditionslinien zwischen Erzählen über Kriminalität in der Frühen Neuzeit und im späten 19. Jahrhundert deutlicher konturiert.
