    El presente estudio tiene la finalidad de analizar los estatutos del Real Colegio de San Fernando y Universidad de Santo Tomás de Quito, junto a sus tentativas de reformas, en lo referente a las cátedras dirigidas a la enseñanza del Derecho Romano a través del Corpus iuris civilis. Así, con base en el análisis de las fuentes documentales de los archivos históricos de Quito y de Sevilla, se examinan las disposiciones estatuarias que regularon dichas cátedras romanistas, para de esta forma identificar su contenido académico, junto al material bibliográfico utilizado por los catedráticos que las impartieron. Estos maestros se servirían de la compilación justinianea a través de sus distintos comentarios, para formar, desde un punto de vista teórico, a los futuros bachilleres en Leyes, quienes, luego de haber realizado, tanto la respectiva práctica forense, como un examen casuístico de habilitación, obtenían el título de abogado de la Real Audiencia.

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the statutes of the Real Colegio de San Fernando and Universidad de Santo Tomás of Quito, along with their attempts to its reforms, in relation to the involved within the instruction of Roman law throughout the Corpus iuris civilis. Therefore, based on an analysis of the documentary sources of the historical archives of Quito and Seville, the statutory disposition that regulated the aforementioned Romanist subjects were examined in order to identify their academic content within the bibliographic material used by the professors who taught them. These professors would use the Justinian compilation through their several comments to teach, from a theoretical point of view, the future Bachelors of Law, who, after completing both the respective legal apprenticeship and a casuistic bar examination, obtaining the title of Attorney of the Real Audiencia.
