The author presents a theoretical model of reading the relation between innovation and small enterprises. The model includes three elements. First, the multidimensional, multifactorial, procedural, dynamic and non-linear nature of innovation. Secondly, the specificity of factors that generate innovation related to enterprise (strategic profile and capabilities), to the network within which the production chains of goods and services are developed (with increasingly distributed value chains, permeating resources diversified in the territories) and to the context in which the enterprise and the network operate (often composed of multiple contexts, many territories). Third, the central role of knowledge in innovation processes and the relational character of the approach to reading innovation. © FrancoAngeli.
