    This article considers the consequences of the Chicago School’s theoretical shift in the early 1950s on the issues of the concentration of private economic power and the linking of the economic and political spheres. It analyzes the process by which the first school, embodied by Henry Simons and Frank Knight, which accepted government intervention and placed emphasis on the deliberative nature of the democratic system, was progressively supplanted by a new approach rejecting any intervention in the market process and promoting a strict separation between the economic and political spheres. We focus on the dynamic through which this new conception of liberalism tends to consider the democratic process as a threat to economic liberties.

    Cet article traite des conséquences du glissement entre la Première et la Seconde École de Chicago quant à la question de la concentration du pouvoir économique privé et à celle de l’articulation des sphères économiques et politiques. Il montre comment le néolibéralisme, porté par Henry Simons et Frank Knight, qui légitimait l’intervention publique dans la sphère du marché et qui mettait l’accent sur l’importance de la délibération démocratique, a été progressivement évincé par une nouvelle approche refusant toute ingérence dans la sphère de marché, insistant sur la nécessaire séparation des champs économiques et politiques et conduisant in fine à considérer le processus de choix politique comme une menace potentielle pour l’exercice des libertés de marché.
