Este artículo presenta cinco casos de pacientes psiquiátricos con una pobre red familiar. ¿Qué se puede hacer cuando no hay familia que cuide y atienda al enfermo mental, o cuando la familia no cuenta con las capacidades y habilidades necesarias para enfrentar esta situación? Si bien el tratamiento y la re inserción social mejoran cuando una familia comprometida y responsable se implica y acompaña al paciente en el proceso, ¿qué se hace si no existe familia alguna para acompañar al enfermo? ¿Qué papel juega el estado social y las políticas públicas en la atención de esta problemática? La Convención de Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidades creó un derecho nuevo: el derecho a vivir en la comunidad. Este derecho implica que las personas vivan en la comunidad y accedan a los mismos servicios que todos, en lugar de estar institucionalizadas y asignadas a ghettos administrativos. Éste es el gran reto.

This article presents five cases of psychiatric patients with a poor family network. What can be done when there is no family to take care of the mentally ill, or when the family does not have the necessary skills and abilities to face this situation? Although treatment and social reintegration improve when a committed and responsible family is involved and accompanies the patient in the process, what is done if there is no family to accompany the patient? What role does the social state and public policies play in addressing this problem? The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities created a new right: the right to live in the community. This right implies that people live in the community and access the same services as everyone, instead of being institutionalized and assigned to administrative ghettos. This is the great challenge.
