Resumen de Identidad, comunicación y modernidad en América Latina

  Desde sus inicios, pero especialmente desde mediados de los años setenta, los estudios de comunicación en América Latina han vivido desgarrados entre dos cuestiones: la tecnología -el "hecho tecnológico" con su razón modernizadora o desarrollista- y la actual, la cuestión de la memoria y las identidades en su lucha por sobrevivir y reconstituirse desde la resistencia y la reapropiación. La incertidumbre, la vacilación teória de esos estudios, su dificil traducción a otros "idiomas" tiene no poco que ver con la ambigüedad de que se carga un saber mestizo de dos lógicas: la del conocimiento regulado por leyes de acumulación y compatibilidad, y la del re-conocimiento de las diferencias y las verdades culturales. Es por eso que el tema de esta conferencia nos concierne de un modo bien particular a los latinoamericanos, pues lo que en él se nos plantea no es tanto una cuestión de actualidad sino la del destino mismo de la modernidad latinoamericana, o mejor la trama de modernidad y discontinuidades culturales, de acronías y utopías que sostiene y resiste, asimila y enfrenta la comunicación masiva en nuestros pueblos.

  Since its inception, but especially since the mid-seventies, communication studies in Latin America have been torn between two issues: technology -the "technological fact" with its modernizing or developmentalist reason- and the current one, the question of memory and identities in their struggle to survive and reconstitute themselves from resistance and reappropriation. The uncertainty, the theoretical vacillation of these studies, their difficult translation into other "languages" has little to do with the ambiguity that a mestizo knowledge of two logics is loaded: that of knowledge regulated by laws of accumulation and compatibility, and of the re-knowledge of cultural differences and truths. That is why the theme of this conference concerns us in a very particular way to Latin Americans, because what is presented in it is not so much a question of actuality but the very fate of Latin American modernity, or better the plot of modernity and cultural discontinuities, of acronyms and utopias that sustains and resists, assimilates and confronts mass communication in our peoples.
