Resumen de Los estudios farmacéuticos: alcances y limitaciones de un campo de indagación emergente

Los estudios farmacéuticos han cobrado fuerza recientemente como un campo de indagación teórica y empírica particular, centrándose en la caracterización del papel preponderante que la industria farmacéutica y la circulación de sus productos desempeñan en las sociedades contemporáneas. En este artículo se examinan los orígenes del campo, se revisan las principales investigaciones que han jalonado su surgimiento, así como se discuten las principales elaboraciones teóricas que sustentan su especificidad. Se revisan así los tres ejes fundamentales que han contribuido a su conformación: 1) el establecimiento de una tradición de estudios sociales sobre la industria farmacéutica y los medicamentos 2) la delimitación como objeto de análisis y estudio de las particulares prácticas científico-tecnológicas que sustentan el desarrollo de medicamentos y su difusión en los mercados 3) la generación de nociones teóricas para dar cuenta del poder transformador de la industria farmacéutica y sus productos. Por último, se discute los alcances y limitaciones de este nuevo campo de indagación.

The pharmaceutical studies have recently gained momentum as a field of theoretical and empirical research focusing on the characterization of the predominant role that the pharmaceutical industry and drugs play in contemporary societies.This article discusses the origins and reviews the main research studies that have pioneered this field and discusses the major theoretical developments that support its specificity. Thus three key axes that have contributed to the field are reviewed: 1) the establishment of a tradition of social studies on the pharmaceutical industry and drugs 2) the characterization as an object of analysis and research of scientific and technological practices that support drug development and distribution onto markerts 3) the creation of theoretical concepts to account for the transforming power of the pharmaceutical industry and its products. Finally, the scope and limitations of this new field of inquiry are discussed.
