Sue uses the figures and conventions of novelistic and romantic pathos with distance to criticise colonial slavery. "Atar-Gull" avenges his father, put to death by the slave-owner Wil, by wiling his way into his goodwill, then wreicking havoc and telling him the story when he has become mute and paralysed.
