    Between the half of the 9th century and the end of the 10th century, the territory of what would become Portugal was as open space to asturleonese colonization. Starting from the Coimbra and Portucale counties, but also regarding other forms of integrating in the affirmative movement of Asturleonese kingdom, that western territory was co-lonized by an expansionist nobility, a clergy who reactivated ancient diocesis, free men attracted by the perspective of obtaining lands and even an exiled prince and his court. We can still identify impressive materials that can be attributed to this process, surpri-sing both in quantity and quality. In this paper, I aim to clarify the first steps of this long process, as well as identify its leading men and achievements.

    Entre meados do século IX e finais do século X, o território que viria a formar Portugal foi um espaço aberto à colonização asturleonesa. Tendo por base os condados de Coimbra e de Portucale, mas também outras formas de integração no movimento de afirmação do reino asturleonês, aquele território ocidental foi colonizado por uma nobreza expansionista, um clero que reactivou antigas dioceses, homens livres atraídos pelas expectativas de obter terras e, até, um príncipe exilado e respectiva corte. Desse processo ficaram impressionantes testemunhos materiais, em quantidade e qualidade surpreendentes. Neste artigo, abordo os primeiros tempos desse longo processo e respectivos protagonistas e materializações.
