Resumen de Juan Baltazar Maziel en tres momentos literarios del Virreinato del Río de la Plata, y un preludio

Juan Baltasar Maziel ha sido estudiado como letrado colonial rioplatense y figura destacada de los estudios superiores en la región. En otras, pocas, ocasiones, se ha prestado atención, además, a su escritura literaria. Este artículo se inserta en esa cadena de lecturas a partir de la reconstrucción de un Maziel literato. La lectura de sus textos poéticos coloca a Maziel en tensiones propias de un sujeto criollo virreinal, y permite observar ciertas recurrencias: la aclamación a figuras de poder, por un lado, y el uso de voces y formas populares, por el otro. Recurriendo al estudio de estos cuatro momentos estéticos de su trayectoria de los que tenemos noticia gracias al archivo, se proponen hipótesis en torno a su figura y a la dinámica pública del intercambio letrado en la región. Se trata de un intento por abrir el estudio de una obra que permanece anclada al silencio de un archivo que solo responde cuando se lo cuestiona.

Juan Baltasar Maziel has been studied as a Latin American colonial lawyer and a leading figure in higher education in the region. On other (few) occasions, attention has been paid to his literary writing. This article is inserted in this chain of readings based on the reconstruction of a literary Maziel. The reading of his poetic texts places Maziel in tension with his identity as a viceregal creole subject, and allows us to note certain recurrences:
praise of figures of power, on the one hand, and the use of popular voices and forms, on the other. Resorting to the study of these four aesthetic moments in his career, which we are aware of thanks to archival work, hypotheses are proposed around his figure and the public dynamics of legal exchange in the region. It is an attempt to open the study of a work that remains anchored to the silence of an archive of material that only responds when it is questioned.
