Los hospitales rurales de Aragón en el último tercio del siglo XVIII

    Los documentos de las visitas pastorales nos informan de que la mitad de los pueblos de Aragón durante el final del siglo XVIII tenían un pequeño hospital, cuyo Patrono era el Pueblo, el Ayuntamiento o la Parroquia. Su construcción y sus medios eran muy modestos. La asistencia en esa época se dedicaba predominantemente a enfermos, pero también a pobres y transeuntes. En algunos de los documentos se cita al hospitalero/a, encargado de los cuidados del enfermo y de la higiene del hospital. La asistencia de médico, cirujano y boticario se señala en algunos de los informes, sobre todo en los de los núcleos rurales mayores. Consta en algunos documentos la buena acogida a los peregrinos a quienes generalmente se les aloja en el hospital.

    The documents of the pastoral visits have informed us that half of the villages of Aragon, during the end of the eighteenth century, had a small hospital whose patron were the town’s citizens, the municipal government or the local church parish. Their construction and their means were very modest. Medical assistance at that time was predominantly devoted to the sick, but it also was given to the poor as well as to those that were passing through the city. In some of the documents the “hospitalero/a”, in charge of the care of the patient and the hygiene of the hospital, is mentioned. The assistance of doctor, surgeon and apothecary is indicated in other reports, especially in those of the major rural centers. In yet other documents, there are reports that pilgrims were well received in the hospitals.
