En la ciudad de Lima, en el siglo XVII, abundaron los candidatos a la santidad. Uno de ellos fue Francisco del Castillo, perteneciente a la Compañía de Jesús. Como era habitual en esos casos, para favorecer su postulación, se escribió una hagiografía poco después de su muerte, a la que se agregaron otras tres a lo largo del tiempo. En este artículo analizamos la imagen del sujeto que crearon y recrearon esas obras, las características de ellas, los objetivos que perseguían y la incidencia que tuvieron en la causa de beatificación del candidato. Esto en el marco de las políticas de santidad que, por una parte, postulaba la provincia peruana y, por otra, la Santa Sede.

In the city of Lima, in the 17th century, there was an abundance of candidates for sainthood. One of them was Francisco del Castillo, a Jesuit. As was usual in these cases, a hagiography was written shortly after his death to promote his postulation, to which were added three others over the course of the years. In this article we analyze the image of the subject created and recreated by these works, their characteristics, their aims and their effects on the beatification process of Francisco del Castillo, in the context of the policies on sainthood both of the Province of Peru which was promoting the cause, and of the Holy See.
