      The groups are powerful tools for influencing, changes behavior, cognitions and skills of members by facilitating the reformulation of problems they face in the real world and leading to new thinking, learning. Group work is a form of intervention in groups guiding patterns of interaction, activity programs where members through their relationship have growth learnings, personal development and different apprenticeships improving the capabilities of individuals.

      There are countless definitions of Social Work with groups even though the consensus over them is scarce. As a method or practice of Social Work, makes use and using processes that emerge when more than three people working with a common purpose. In short, it is a professional context in which social workers guide or lead groups intentionally to carry out individual or collective goals.

      After the 70s of the twentieth century was marked by the decline in interest groups and methods for them to intervene, but recently re-emerged in various contexts interest in teaching and research methodologies and professional skills to work on and engage in group. This study highlights the resilience of the field and challenges to their study in the Portuguese context.

      Os grupos são instrumentos poderosos para influenciar, mudar comportamentos, competências e cognições dos membros, facilitando a reformulação de problemas que estes enfrentam no mundo real e conduzindo a novas reflexões, aprendizagens. O trabalho de grupo é uma forma de intervenção nos grupos orientando padrões de interação, programas de atividade em que os membros através do seu relacionamento têm oportunidade de crescimento, desenvolvimento pessoal e diversas aprendizagens melhorando as capacidades dos indivíduos.São inúmeras as definições de trabalho social com grupos ainda que o consenso sobre as mesmas seja escasso. Sendo um método ou uma prática do Serviço Social, recorre e utiliza os processos que emergem quando mais de três pessoas trabalham com um propósito comum. Em síntese, é um contexto profissional em que os assistentes sociais orientam ou conduzem grupos intencionalmente para a realização de objetivos individuais e ou coletivos.Após a década de 70 do seculo XX foi assinalável o declínio no interesse pelos grupos e métodos para neles intervir, mas recentemente ressurgiu em vários contextos o interesse pelo ensino e investigação sobre metodologias e competências profissionais para trabalhar e intervir em grupo.
