  • Resumen
    • As I boarded the Air Kenya flight to Lamu Island for the first time, I could not help but get excited about the experience that was to come. I had been told that the people of Lamu are conservative and proud of their heritage. I remembered the stories that my mother used to tell me about Lamu’s vibrant culture and tasty seafood. I loved the glint in her eyes every time she repeated the same story. My mind drifted away from the island’s culture to the reason for my visit. As a representative of the Kenya Human Rights Commission, a nongovernmental organization, I was undertaking a study on the extent to which environmental impact assessments (EIAs) in Kenya incorporated human rights concerns. This study was inspired by growing worries among community members about the impact of development projects on their daily lives.
