The article discusses the controversy between two important Paraguayans intellectuals, Cecilio Báez and Juan Emiliano O'Leary. Members of the so-called Generation of the twentieth century, these intellectuals staged a controversy about the history and the Paraguayan historiography. From July 1902, Cecilio Báez presented 25 articles in the newspaper El Civico , from Asunción , published in the book La tyranny en el Paraguay and Juan O'Leary has published 37 articles in the daily La Patria , under the general heading of El cretinism Paraguay . Article's goal is to identify the main views of each author, pointing similarities and differences and, the context of the controversy of the production and what the repercussions for the Paraguayan historiography

O artigo trata sobre a polêmica entre dois importantes intelectuais paraguaios, Cecilio Báez e Juan Emiliano O’Leary. Membros da chamada geração dos Novecentos, esses intelectuais protagonizaram uma polêmica sobre a história e a historiografia paraguaia. A partir de julho de 1902, Cecilio Báez apresentou 25 artigos, no jornal El Cívico, de Asunción, publicados no livro La tirania en el Paraguay e Juan O’Leary publicou 37 artigos no diário La Pátria, sobre título geral de El cretinismo paraguaio. Objetivo do artigo é identificar as principais visões de cada autor, apontando diferenças e semelhaças, o contexto de produção da polêmica e qual a repercussão para a historiografia paraguaia
