La separación geográfica entre los hábitats para la alimenta-ción, el refugio y la reproducción de las tortugas marinas ha-ce que éstas realicen migraciones extensas.Para estudiar este fenómeno,se han utilizado análisis genéticos,marcaje y tele-metría,y con ellos se ha demostrado que pueden nadar cien-tos o hasta miles de kilómetros desde las playas de anidación hasta las zonas de alimentación y viceversa. Las tortugas verde y carey se desplazan hacia hábitats bentó-nicos, donde crece pasto marino y esponjas; mientras que las tortugas lora y baula migran a zonas de alimentación más am-plias y variables. Corrientes, giros y frentes oceánicos pueden influir en las migraciones. La sobrevivencia de las tortugas marinas depende en gran medida del manejo que se den en y cerca de las playas de anidación.Se necesita más recursos pa-ra protegerlas mejor dentro de Costa Rica,y así dar un ejem-plo a las demás naciones para que, cuando las tortugas ticas pasen por sus aguas,puedan ayudar en su protección.

The geographic separation of sea turtle foraging, refu-ge and reproductive habitats makes them undertake extensive migrations. To study this phenomenon, ge-netic analysis, tagging and telemetry have been used, and it has been shown that they can swim hundreds or even thousands of kilometers between nesting bea-ches and foraging habitats and vice versa. Green and hawksbill turtles move towards benthic ha-bitats, where sea grass and sponges grow; while olive ridleys and leatherback turtles migrate to larger and more variable foraging grounds. Currents, eddies and oceanic fronts can influence migrations. Sea turtle sur-vival depend in large measures on the management given to the nesting beaches and surroundings. More resources are needed to improve protection within Costa Rica, and thereby provide an example for other countries, so that when Costa Rican sea turtles pass through their waters, they will help in their protection.
