Resumen
Juan Cobo was a missionary of the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church sent in the late sixteenth century to the Far East to evangelize the Christian faith, being at the same time diplomat, translator, astronomer and sinologist. During his short stay in Asia, he translated and composed several works, among which the Peng Sim Po Cam stands out for its historical importance, being the first chinese work translated into european languages. In fact, Juan Cobo was a landmark character from the sixteenth century when referring to the theme of cultural interactions between East and West. However, because of the remoteness of his life and the distant place where he devoted the last years of his life for the European investigators, little has been known except his works, even of his concrete birth date still remains clear. In this article, the author will attempt to replenish historical data from different sources in Spain, China and the Philippines, carefully following positivist-documentary research methods, develop content on his youth, travel to the Philippines, diplomatic mission to Japan and comments on his exploits. In this way it is hoped to recover as true as possible the true image of the Pioneer in Translating Chinese Works Abroad, clarifying the cognitive shadows.
