  • Resumen
    • Trade tensions and international sanctions continue to influence global flows of goods and materials, which makes it easy to understand why business leaders in the industrial minerals industry are watchful of the macro dynamics outside their immediate markets. There was no let-up in saber rattling between the United States and China in July and August over trade practices, with the former accusing the latter of artificially devaluing the yuan in response to threats of an additional 10% tariff on Chinese exports that are not already included in the existing 25% levy (p15).US’ sanctions against Syria and Iran have led to ships being impounded in the straits of Gibraltar and Hormuz in an effort to strangle the fight out of ‘miscreant’ nations that have fallen foul of international law – adding to the already palpable uncertainty in global markets. Betting on batteries Looking to battery minerals - following Fastmarkets’ highly successful 11th Lithium Supply and Markets conference in Santiago in June - we feature a special report from the event, with reactions to recent shifts in the lithium market from key industry participants (pp20-22).
