  • Decision to act The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN body tasked with overseeing the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships, took the decision to enact these regulations in October 2016. Despite assurances from the Clean Shipping Alliance, among others, that these waste products are harmless, some port authorities have taken a dim view of the practise and have banned their use in territorial waters. The use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel is rising in shipping, but it is mainly restricted to ferries and other markets where the vessel moves between a limited set of ports.
