Resumen de Bulgarian women and their right to education

Petya Nedeleva

  • The issue of the right to education of Bulgarian women historically affects different points of view. This is largely instigated by customary law, Christian morality, popular beliefs and traditions. At the centre of the traditional Bulgarian family and society as a whole is the man, and the woman has the duty to be subordinate and dependent, without the right to stand alone, being often placed on the same level or even lower than the children. Traditional attitude towards women in society leads to a natural refusal to gain access to education. Bulgarian enlighteners and public figures make efforts to harmonize the term and program of secondary education in males and girls’ schools, women‘s access to higher education, the practice of different professions and the opportunity for professional realization of educated women. Comparing the right of women to access education on a global, European and Balkan scale, it can be concluded that the legislative changes and reforms in education towards women in Bulgaria are adequate and timely and the Bulgarian legislator is not lagging behind in introducing the modern trends in the field of education.
