  Aunque el Abencerraje pasa por ser la obra fundacional del género morisco se trata, leída en su literalidad, de la historia de un cautivo en la vieja frontera cristianomusulmana del XV. Por ese motivo su estructura, edificada sobre el tópico del doble cautiverio –por las armas y el amor– y condicionada por un ambiente de disparidad de cultos y razas, se disipa en los romances moriscos que, no obstante, florecen a su zaga.
  
  Será Góngora quien, aprovechando el horizonte referencial que le brinda la nueva frontera con el Turco, alumbre un breve subgénero, los romances africanos, que trasplanta a Orán la estructura y espíritu de la novelita quinientista.

  Although the Abencerraje is considered the Moorish work par excellence, in reality it tells the story of a captive in the old Christian-Muslim frontier of the fifteenth century. For that reason its structure, built on the topic of double captivity – by weapons and love– and the disparity of cults and races, is diluted in the Moorish romances that, nevertheless, arise as its inspiration. It will be Góngora who, taking advantage of the referential horizon he discovers in the new frontier with the Turkish, creates a brief subgenre - the African romances - that transfers to Oran the structure and spirit of Abencerraje
