    El la canonización del predecesor de Bonifacio VIII se ha reconocido, de hecho, la santidad de Pietro del Morrrone, perteneciente a la categoría eremítica más bien que a la papal. En la obra la hagiografía de Pietro del Morrone tiende a confirmar cómo la elección del lugar, el contexto geográfico-espacial de la vida monástica y eremíta constituye un elemento crucial en la experiencia ascética. Los lugares no son simplemente el fondo paisajístico en el cual se desarrolla un acontecimiento espiritual y existencial, sino un elemento que interactúa profundamente con la santidad. El eremita - en movimiento vive su experiencia entre la ciudad y el desertum, los polos que consitutyen los dos lugares antinómicos, los extremos en torno a los cuales se articula y se organiza la inserción cristiana en el espacio y en la sociedad entre la tardía edad antigua y la plena edad medieval, favoreciendo la institucionalización de las experiencias de sanidad. La lejanía genera afán y la elección del lugar desencadena una dialéctica entre separación y visibilidad que crea una relación entre retiro del mundo y protagonismo social, como el caso del suceso existencial y hagiográfico de Pietro del Morrone evidencia con eficacia.

    The canonization of the predecessor of Boniface VIII recognizes, in effect, the holiness of Pietro del Morrone as beloging in the category of hermits rather than in that of Popes. In this artivle, the hagiography of Pietro del Morrone is invoked to confirm that the choice of place, the geographical context, the spatial dimension, of the monastic and eremitical life, represent a cardinal element of the practice of asceticism. Place is not simply the landscape, within which -or the backgrouns, against which - this spiritual and existential experience takes place, but an integral component that interacts profoundly with holiness. The hermit-in-motion lives his experience between city and desertum, the twin poles that consitute two antinomic places, the outer ends, around which, in Late Antiquity and in the High Middle Ages, the organic insertion of Christianity in space and in society took place, promoting the institutionalizarion of experiences of holiness. Distance creates demand, and the choice of place brings about a dialectics between separateness and visibility, resulting in a relationship between withdrawal from the world and protaonism in society, as is efficaciously manisfested in the history and hagiography of Pietro del Morrone.
