    La adirmación de Agustín según la cual los creyentes, en el tender a Dios, se interesan particularmente en la sociedad humana, muestra una visión genralizada en los Discursos. En su predicación él interviene enérgicamente sobre varios problemas sociales, y la perspectiva de un cambio en la sociedad, que él orienta puntualmente a la voluntad de Dios, muestra una aproximación diversa a las realidades humanas que se realiza en la sociedad cristiana. Las circunstancias en las cuales tiene lugar la predicación, y la composición no homogénea del auditorio, reflejan las características de una unión todavía inperfecta, pero que asume un papel imprescindible en la historia. Resulta la imagen de una comunidad con creyentes de rasgos bien delineados, en particular por el papel supereminente del clero. Al emperador y a los honores mundanos se les reconoce una función relevante, pero condicionada. Estos elementos concurren para delinear los rasgos de la ciudad cristiana, claramente reconocibles en los Discursos.

    Augustine's affirmation that believers, in turning to God, have human society particularly at heart, reflects a vision often found in his Sermons. In his preaching. Augustine often vigorously addresses various social problems: the prospect of a change in society, which he relates to God's will, reflects a different approach to human realities, one that is proper to Christian society. The circumstances in which he is preaching, and the rather non - homogeneous meke - up of his public, reflect a community that is as yet imperfect, but which is already taking up its indispensable part in history. The impression is given of a community of believers, with unmistakable characteristics, including the supereminent role of the ckergy; it acknowledges that the emperor, and worldly positions, do have an important function, yet one that is contingent. These elements come together to trace the characteristics of the Christian City, which are clearly identifiable in the Sermons.
