  • Resumen
    • The Rio Chiquito is a small river placed near the Pacific Coast in the northwest of Nicaragua. From the second half of this century its pollution levels have increased notably. Nowadays the situation shows maximum environmental degradation. With the help of a sampling net we have tried to establish the degree of contamination as well as its potential decontamination. The analysis of the different parameters has established two types of contamination. On the one hand it receives domestic water characterized by the increase in oxidizability, detergent and oils. On the other hand it recives industrial water whose principal feature is the high chrome concentrations. The decontamination capacity of the river in the period studied is due mainly to the effect of the dilution. The river increases his flow by the springs and affluent contribution. Nevertheless, others processes like precipitation and heavy metals deposition also contribute to its purification. It has been checked that the contamination that the river shows does not affect to the groundwater.
