El presente artículo tiene por objeto estudiar si la Ley de Registro Civil de 1884 significó una ruptura o una continuidad con el sistema de partidas eclesiásticas vigentes en Chile hasta ese año. Para esto se investigan los registros implementados en Chile desde la Independencia hasta el Gobierno de Domingo Santa María y el desarrollo institucional del Estado durante esta última administración. Y se hace un análisis comparativo entre partidas eclesiásticas y los certificados civiles de 1885.

This article aims at studying whether the Civil Registry Act of 1884 entailed the rupture or the continuation of the system of church certificates in force in Chile until that year. To that end, the records implemented in Chile from the Independence to the Government of Domingo Santa María and the Institutional development of the State during this last administration is researched. A comparative analysis between church certificates and civil certificates of 1885 is carried out.
