Benjamín Balboa era el radiotelegrafista de guardia en el Centro de Comunicaciones de la Armada en la Ciudad Lineal de Madrid el 18 de julio de 1936 cuando se recibió el telegrama de Franco desde Canarias saludando al ejército de África, previo a su desplazamiento para ponerse al frente de la sublevación. Se negó a transmitir ese mensaje y, previa detención de su superior y en comunicación con el Ministerio de Marina, se puso en contacto directo con sus compañeros radiotelegrafistas de los buques, instándolos a sublevarse contra sus superiores del Cuerpo General de la Armada. El llamamiento tuvo éxito y las tripulaciones se hicieron cargo de los buques, impidiendo el paso del Estrecho hasta el 5 de agosto.

Benjamin Balboa was the radio operator on duty at the Communications Centre of the Navy in the Ciudad Lineal of Madrid on July 18th, 1936, when it was received a telegram from Franco (from the Canaries islands) saluting the Army of Africa.
This was right before Franco moved to direct the uprising movement. Balboa refused to convey that message and, upon arrest of his superior and in communication with the Ministry of the Navy, he contacted directly with his fellow radio operators of the other ships, urging them to revolt against their superiors Corps General of the Army. The appeal was successful and the crews controlled the ships, preventing the passage of the Straits until the 5th of August.
