On rocks and logs along an Amazonian river at low water, one might see the smooth dark-grey shells of basking arrau river turtles, also known as giant Amazon river turtles. As one of their names suggests, they are the largest turtles in the Amazon. The shells of females can be nearly a meter long, and individuals can weigh up to 45 kilograms. Not all turtles abandon their young to their fates. Here, Barrett investigates the motherly nature of these giant turtles.
