Resumen de Quantitative Exploration of Attitudinal Shift in Translation:: A Case of The Newcomer and its English Translations

  • Drawing on the framework of Appraisal Theory and inferential statistics, the present study examines possible shifts of attitudes in an influential Chinese communist short story The Newcomer and its two English translations. Such shifts are quantitatively explored in terms of the categories, block densities and prosody of attitudinal unit, revealing both typological and pragmatical features of attitude in translation. It is found that such attitudinal shifts may stem from certain contextual factors (e.g. linguistic distance, cultural diversity, ideological gap) that prompt translator adjust their translating strategies for attitudinal adaption.
