    La cultura es un ideal de la civilización occidental, la expresión más elevada del espíritu humano, manifestación y medio al mismo tiempo de la libertad, aquella que nos aleja progresivamente de la barbarie. Por cultura puede definirse en principio, al menos como lo entiende Adorno, la producción libre del espíritu, aquella que va más allá de la necesidad inmediata. Pero la cultura ha llegado a creerse efectivamente libre del reino de la necesidad, de sus condicionamientos materiales, y eso la ha hecho ciega ante su propia falta de libertad. Esto es lo que marca la dialéctica de la cultura según Adorno, el hecho de que en ella se exprese la aspiración más elevada del espíritu, pero al hacerse ciega a sus condicionamientos sociales y materiales termina poniéndose al servicio de las condiciones existentes, en vez de aspirar a su transformación; así somete el espíritu al mundo objetivo de la producción y de las estructuras sociales existentes.

    Culture is an ideal of Western civilization, the highest expression of the human spirit, manifestation and means at the same time of freedom, one that progressively takes us away from barbarism. By culture it can be defined in principle, at least as Adorno understands it, the free production of the spirit, that which goes beyond immediate need. But culture has come to believe itself effectively free of the realm of necessity, of its material conditioning, and that has made it blind to its own lack of freedom. This is what marks the dialectic of culture according to Adorno, the fact that it expresses the highest aspiration of the spirit, but by becoming blind to its social and material conditions ends up putting itself at the service of existing conditions, instead of aspire to its transformation; thus submits the spirit to the objective world of production and existing social structures.
