The object of this article are the measures taken by the Carolingian princes to confront the alimentary crises, as found in three capitularies published by Charlemagne between the end of the eighth and the beginning of the ninth century : the Capitulare Episcoporum (ca 779), the Capitulaire de Francfort (794) and the Capitulaire de Nimègue (806). At first glance very disparate, the measures anticipated by these texts were not, up until now, object of an analysis as a single group. Through this group viewpoint, we will attempt to go beyond the acknowledgment of the « despair » that would have inspired them, and ponder on whether or not there could have been a common guideline in the treatment of the problem of famine under the Carolingians.

Dans trois capitulaires publiés par Charlemagne entre la fin du viiie et le début du ixe siècle − le Capitulare Episcoporum (ca 779), le capitulaire de Francfort (794) et le capitulaire de Nimègue (806) − on trouve des mesures prises par les princes carolingiens pour faire face aux crises alimentaires. À première vue très disparates, les mesures prévues par ces textes n’ont pas fait, jusqu’à présent, l’objet d’une analyse d’ensemble. Une telle analyse peut nous aider à aller au-delà du constat de « désespoir » qui aurait inspiré ces mesures, et aussi à réfléchir sur l’existence d’une ligne directrice commune dans le traitement du problème de la famine sous les Carolingiens.
