Cette enquête vise à documenter le chantier de construction de l’abbaye du milieu du xiie à la fin du xve siècle, en s’intéressant davantage aux ouvriers et artisans et à leur travail qu’à l’œuvre architecturale. La combinaison des sources archéologiques et historiques permet d’estimer les effectifs des maçons et des ouvriers qui travaillaient sur le chantier de Suger et de proposer la reconstitution d’un chantier exceptionnel par sa taille pour l’époque. Pour le xiiie siècle, ces sources montrent également une spécialisation des tâches, notamment dans le travail de la pierre, conforme à celle des chantiers contemporains. Enfin, dès la fin du xiiie siècle, les comptes de la Commanderie montrent les spécificités de ce grand chantier monastique quant à la main-d’œuvre employée, sa rémunération et l’organisation du travail. Elles mettent notamment en évidence l’existence d’une main-d’œuvre issue de la communauté de l’abbaye à côté de maîtres artisans souvent gagés à l’année. Une tendance à la sécularisation du travail semble s’opérer dans le courant des xive et xve siècles. Parmi ces maîtres, l’existence d’un office de maître verrier attaché à l’entretien des vitraux de la basilique pendant toute la période, depuis sa création par Suger au xiie siècle, constitue une véritable spécificité dionysienne.

The aim of the present study is to gather information on craftsmen and workmen working on Saint-Denis building yard rather than on the piece of architecture itself. The combination of archaeological and historical sources helps to reconstruct the exceptional size of abbot Suger’s building yard and the numbers of masons and workmen working on it in the mid-twelfth century. For the thirteenth century, these sources also show that the specialisation of the tasks regarding stone cutting and laying is similar than on other great building yards at that time. Finally, accounting books show the particularities of such a great monastic building yard regarding the workers, their remuneration and the organisation of their work. They show in particular that lay brothers from the community of the abbey were employed on the building yard next to master craftsmen who were often granted annual wages. Secular craftsmen and workers seem however highly predominant on the building yard from the fourteenth century on. Among these master craftsmen, another specificity of Saint-Denis should be highlighted : the existence of a stained glass master appointed to the upkeep of the basilica stained glass windows. This function was created by abbot Suger in the mid-twelfth century and lasted until the beginning modern period.
