“No bridge lasts forever”: the hybrid nature of Gloria Anzaldúa’s thought

Resumen
Writing from Poland, I here focus on analyzing Anzaldúa’s work using three different methodologies: Postcolonial theory, from a Latin American perspective; gender studies, from the perspective of Third World women or women of color, and queer studies, underlying “her formative role in developing queer theory” (Anzaldúa, Gloria 5).
This decision resulted from my deepest belief that, since Anzaldúa refused to be placed in one location or system and questioned traditional disciplinary thought, the only adequate approach to her oeuvre must be holistic. Operating within the system that has structured us to be followers and not leaders is a true challenge. Here I am speaking from my position as a woman raised in a very patriarchal culture and in a country with a legacy of a communist regime in which questioning was not encouraged but severely punished. So, Anzaldúa’s words in her essay “Speaking in Tongues: A Letter to Third World Women Writers” resonate well with my standpoint.
