La construcció de l’església de Sant Jaume d’Espolla

    Tot i que les primeres notícies de l’església de Sant Jaume d’Espolla són del tombant del primer mil·lenni, el temple actual no es va edificar fins a finals del segle XVIII sobre un altre de romànic. Aquest ja havia patit diverses obres de millora durant el segle XVII, però va ser l’expansió demogràfica del segle posterior el que va impulsar a construir-ne un de nova planta. Gràcies a uns documents inclosos en els llibres parroquials, es pot seguir el procés constructiu impulsat pel domer Josep Donadeu, tenir constància de com era el temple romànic i dels diferents artesans que van treballar en aquesta obra.

    Although the first records of the church of Saint James in Espolla (Alt Empordà, Catalonia, Spain) are from the turn of the first millennium, the present temple was not built until the end of the eighteenth century over a Romanesque building. The latter had already undergone several improvement works during the seventeenth century, but it was the demographic expansion in the next century that led to the construction of a new church altogether, promoted by the curate Josep Donadeu. Thanks to some documents included in the parochial books, we can follow the construction process and learn details about the Romanesque temple and the different craftsmen who worked in the construction.
