  • With "Les Dieux antiques" and "Les Mots anglais", Mallarmé opposes decaying myth to linguistic vitality, a vitality one of whose sources is in the rejuvenating hymen of Latin and Germanic languages represented by the advent of English from French and Germanic dialects. The letter "s" silenced in Old French and revitalised in the new language symbolises the process and its meaning.
