Contribución del Profesor Johannes Brüggen a la geología en Chile

    El Profesor Johannes Brüggen Messtorff (1887-1953) fue quien, con el libro Fundamentos de Geología de Chile (1950), trazó una primera visión integrada de la geología chilena, que refunde el conocimiento adquirido en 40 años de investigación. A ello deben agregarse unas 60 publicaciones sobre la geología y recursos naturales de Chile y textos didácticos: “Geología” y “Tablas para la Enseñanza de la Mineralogía”. El Prof. Brüggen creó el Instituto de Geología en la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas, primer centro académico de la disciplina en la Universidad de Chile y el país. Allí se formaban los Ingenieros de Minas con mención en Geología. Sus alumnos, los Ingenieros Jorge Muñoz Cristi y Héctor Flores Williams, crearon, junto con Don Humberto Fuenzalida Villegas, la carrera de Geología en esa facultad. Su trascendencia ha sido reconocida con el “Premio Juan Brüggen”, del Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas, a alumnos destacados de Ingeniería de Minas y el “Premio Nacional de Geología-Medalla Juan Brüggen”, del Colegio de Geólogos de Chile, a geólogos destacados. Un glaciar en el Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur y un mineral, brüggenita [Ca(IO3)2·H2O)], llevan su nombre. En 1942, al retirarse, la universidad le rindió un homenaje con la presencia de autoridades del área de la Ingeniería de Minas, egresados y estudiantes de esa carrera y el destacado geólogo argentino Don Horacio J. Harrington. Sin lugar a dudas, el Profesor Johannes Brüggen es el padre de la geología en Chile.

    Professor Johannes Brüggen Messtorff (1887-1953) made the first integrated overview on the geology of Chile with his book entitled “Fundamentals of the Geology of Chile” (1950). In this book he summarized his 40 years long geological experience in Chile. In addition he published over 60 publications on geology and natural resources in Chile and text books like “Geology” and “Mineralogic Tables”. Professor Brüggen created the Geological Institute at the Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas, University of Chile, which represented the first academic unit on this discipline in Chile. In this institute the mining engineers at that time were formed in geology. His students Jorge Muñoz Cristi and Héctor Flores Williams, together with Humberto Fuenzalida Villegas, created the first course in geology in Chile in the same faculty. The enormous significance of Brüggen’s achievements has been recognized with the “Juan Brüggen Award” by the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas, to outstanding mining engineering students, and with the “National Award in Geology - Juan Brüggen Medal” by the  Colegio de Geólogos de Chile to outstanding Chilean geologists. A glacier in the Patagonian southern icefield has been named Brüggen Glacier, and a mineral found in northern Chile has been named brüggenite [Ca(IO3)2·H2O)]. At his retirement, in 1942, the University of Chile organized an homage ceremony to which several prominent authorities related to the mining activity, students and former students, and the renowned Argentinean geologist Horacio Harrington assisted. We conclude that Professor Johannes Brüggen is the father of the Chilean geology.
