Three burnt silos from the recently disappeared Castro deAs Laias located in Ourense (NW Spain) have allowed to test the reliability of archaeomagnetic methods for dating historical fires. AF and thermal demagnetization were carried out to isolate the characteristic component of magnetization.
The demagnetizing behaviour makes possible to identify the principal magnetic carrier mineral as multidomain (MD) and/or pseudo-single domain (PSD) magnetite. The characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) of silos LA-2 and LA-3 showed that they burnt at the same time. Results for silo LA-1 were inconclusive. Additional radiocarbon dating on charcoal from silo LA-2 gives an age of 181 ±61. This results contribute to a better definition of a Secular Variation Curve (SVC) for the early Christian Age in Iberia.
