This essay moves from the methodological approach of cultural history and describeshow Italian liberalism after the unification was culturally and ideologicallyreluctant to challenge itself with the notion of “political party”. This attitude causedthe practice of the “partito della maggioranza”to grow stronger, and while leadingto the development of anti-parliamentarism caused also a good share of the populationto distrust the Liberals.
