  • Resumen
    • Uppermost Cretaceous and lowermost Paleogene marly sediments belonging to the Mendez and Velasco Fms., respectively were studied at the El Mulato section (northeastern Mexico). A fining upward clastic unit containing impact evidences such as microtektites is located between both formations. Biostratigraphical data based on planktic foraminifera indicate that this unit was deposited during a short period o f time, geologically instantaneous. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages indicate lower bathyal depths of deposition for both the Mendez and Velasco Fms.

Nevertheless, they also indicate that components of the clastic unit came from shallow environments (mainly platform), and strongly support the allochtony of the components of the clastic unit.

Sedimentological structures suggest that this unit was deposited under turbidite currents related to the instabilisation and collapse of the continental margin induced by the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary event.
