The Seguili Fm. outcrops in the Prebetic Zone in the Alicante province (SE of Spain). It is middle Aptian to earliest Albian in age, and it was deposited on a broad shallow carbonate platform. The analysis of facies, associations and cycles has led to the differentiation of five depositional environments: (1) the internal platform domain, in which three sub-environments have been distinguished: (la) subaerial exposure, (lb) restricted and (1c) open domains, with deposition of limestones with vadose overprints, miliolids-bearing mudstones and micritic limestones with rudists and orbitolines, respectively; (2) the barrier domain, with deposition of high-energy calcarenites and coral limestones, and (3) the external platform where calcarenites and marly levels alternated.
The main feature of the Seguilf Fm. is the cyclic vertical arrangement in shallowing upwards metre-scale sequences, best developed in the internal platform domain. These cycles have been interpreted as related mainly to repeated variations in different parameters, as depth, input of fine siliciclastics, nutrients content, energy, and restriction of waters. The interpretation of the origin of the cycles considers both autocyclic and allocyclic factors.
