Based on a survey of 400 journalists, this study provides the journalistic role perceptions of Cameroonian journalists at an important period in the Cameroon’s political evolution from a one party, authoritarian, media controlled system to a multiparty, liberal, free press system. According to the findings of the survey, Cameroonian journalists rated western journalistic media roles that are accuracy, analysis and investigation very highly. Beyond their inclination to western journalistic functions, Cameroonian journalists also showed support to other media roles, the so called African, third world journalistic functions such as aiding, assisting in national unity and socio-economic development, giving ordinary people the chance to express themselves as well as develop the intellectual and cultural interest of the public.
